Operation Manhood: TULI

Once again, Operation Manhood: TULI was held last May 9, 2010 at South General Hospital, City of Naga, Cebu. This Tuli Project was made possible through the help of our very owned VW. Felix Vicuña, M.D. who heads the volunteer team of Cebu based doctors and medical practitioners. More than 200 boys (the biggest number ever for Cebu Lodge) living in the City of Naga and its neighboring towns were circumcised.

This Lodge activity was initiated as our contribution to our community and for the support of our belief that the youth is the future of our fatherland.

Arts, Arts, Arts

A Summer Art Workshop
Other kids go for sports this summer, some go for music and dancing, others go for acting and speech while some choose Visual Arts.

Cebu Lodge sponsored a Summer Art Workshop for children aged 6-12 years old. The main objectives of this workshop are to discover if not enhance the art skills of the kids and to teach them the basics in visual arts. It also introduced visual art as a means to express themselves and to boost their level of confidence.

This month long art activity was made possible by UP Fine Arts Alumni Association and PUSOD, Inc. who shared their expertise with the kids. Worshipful Master Douglas S. Tan, a UP Cebu Fine Arts graduate assisted in the session.

All sessions were held every Tues and Thurs morning at the Cebu Masonic Hall under their supervision. Sessions were divided into 2 classes based on children’s level of art knowledge. The first class was for Art and Crafts Appreciation for Kids while the other class was for Basic Drawing and Painting.

Kids were very fortunate to have with them Prof. “Sio” Montera from the UP College of Fine Arts as one of the resource persons. Prof. Montera is a well known Visual Art Professor in Cebu and a winner of GSIS’ National Art contest recently. Being a UP professor, it brings with him years of visual art experience which he freely shared to the kids.

This was a first time activity initiated by the Lodge and plans to make this as an annual event for continuity is now being considered.

Summer is Fun and so We are

Cebu Lodge Goes Zipeline Adventure
For the first time in Lodge history, Cebu Lodge  members as well as members of the  family were treated to a very exciting and thrilling summer outing adventure – Zipeline Adventure.
Located some 33 kms. from the City of Cebu and away from the madding crowd, the group travelled north-westbound to the scenic Cebu’s trans-central highway. With the cooler wind of the early summer morning touched our tender skin and the awesome panoramic view of Cebu seen from the mountaintop, the group brazed through the heights, lows and curves of the famous highway. When we reached our destination and as we look back at the long and winding road we travelled, we found food a plenty. The super hot and mouth watering lechon, sea foods, barbeque  (which we grilled at the site), fruits and the likes were too much for a hungry stomach to resist. The high blood pressures and the swelling sugar readings were put aside for awhile.
After lunch, with much excitement the group plunged into our adventure at K33. Those who can withstand the height and the air rushing speed of the zipeline took the challenge and enjoyed the adrenalin rush. While those who can’t just watched with  fear and lots of envy.
It was a test of pure guts, trying to overcome self-made fear and at the end of the line feel the sweetness of success – a warm smile with a drum beating heart.
With the “Go, go go” chant from the Brothers, who can forget this summer fun?

Cebu Lodge No. 128, F. & A. M. Academic Excellence Award

Going Public? Yes, Cebu Lodge No. 128 went to a public school last March 29, 2010 to award its 1st ever Cebu Lodge Excellence Award.

The awardees were the top 3 deserving students across grade level of Kalunusan Elementary School, a hinterland school in Cebu City. Special awards such as Cash Incentives and a bundle of school supplies were given to the top 3 graduates. Present during the affair was no less than the District Deputy Grand Master of Masonic District RVII-A, VW Sixto Rey M. Orig. The awards were in a form of Gold, Silver and Bronze Medallion especially crafted for that memorable ceremony. This idea was conceptualized by the Master of the Lodge and was duly supported by the Senior and Junior Warden as well as the members. This award was in recognition of the public school system being the foundation of our country’s greatness.

Having received very favorable feedbacks from the school principal, teachers and parents, the 3 Lights have strongly recommended to extend the award to other public schools next year. More focus will be those from the hinterland areas.

On Its 60th Year Anniversary!

The Cebu Lodge No. 128, F. & A. M. is an offspring of the Maktan Lodge No. 30, F. & A. M.  During the first few years reconstruction of Cebu City after the Pacific War, in spite of the handicap of permanent building, however, the growth of Maktan Lodge No. 30, F. & A. M. was quite phenomenally fast to such an extent that it was felt that it would be more advantageous and beneficial to organize another lodge in the same valley.

So on June 1, 1950 some of the matured members of Maktan Lodge No. 30, F. & A. M., namely; Worshipful Brothers, William C. Ogan, Isabelo V. Binamira, John G. Schaberg, Gervasio Y. Ornopia, Sr., Guillermo C. Aballe, Felix M. Sun, Sr., Honorio Nunez, and Brothers John Martin and John F. Harstine who where considered as the founders together with the following barrowed members of Maktan Lodge No. 30, F. & A. M., namely; Worshipful Brothers Nicanor E. Santos, Lim Yuk Su, Remegio Murillo, Jose D.A. Diao, Vicente Empleo, Vicente Racaza, Go Siong Mit, and Sofronio Savellon, signed and filed a petition with the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines for the organization of a second lodge in Cebu City under the Name Cebu Lodge with office and place of meetings in the same building as that of Maktan Lodge No. 30, F. & A. M. at present, at the Masonic Temple, F. Borromeo Street, Cebu City.

The name “Cebu” was chosen not for any particular significance but it was just to distinguish it from Maktan Lodge No. 30, F. & A. M.  The petition was given due consideration and on June 1, 1950 the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines granted us temporary permission to operate under the name of Cebu Lodge (U.D.), F. & A. M. with Worshipful Brother Gervasio Y. Ornopia, Sr. as acting Worshipful Master.  After a successful operation under dispensation for about six months, the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the Philippines finally gave us our Charter on January 24, 1951 and on April 6, 1951 our Cebu Lodge No. 128, F. & A. M. was duly constituted by the Grand Master, Cenon Cervantes in a very impressive ceremony held in the premises of the Cebu Chinese Chamber of Commerce, at present, the Fil-American Building on Jones Avenue, Cebu City and at the same time installed its first officers, namely; W.B. John G. Schaberg as Worshipful Master, Bro. Felix M. Sun as Senior Warden, Bro. Guillermo C. Aballe as the Junior Warden, and W.B. Isabelo V. Binamira as the Secretary – Treasurer.

Freemasonry is the oldest and largest world wide fraternity dedicated to the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God. Although of a religious nature, Freemasonry is not a religion. It urges its members, however, to be faithful and devoted to their own religious beliefs.

The organization of Freemasonry is based on a system of Grand Lodges, each sovereign within its own territory. There is no central authority governing all Grand Lodges. However, to be acknowledged by others, acceptable traditions, standards and practices must be maintained.

In the history of Freemasonry around the world, Filipino Masonry may have one of the most unique, interesting, colorful and dramatic stories as it played a vital and aggressive role in our search for independence from foreign invaders.
Many of the prominent Filipinos who sacrificed their lives for the motherland during the Spanish, American and Japanese occupations were Freemasons. They are Dr. Jose Rizal - our National Hero, Marcelo H. del Pilar, Apolinario Mabini - the Brains of the Revolution, Andres Bonifacio - The Leader of the KKK, Emilio Aguinaldo - the First President of the Philippine Republic, Justice Jose Abad Santos, Presidents Manuel L. Quezon, Manuel Roxas, and Jose P. Laurel, to name a few. Gen. Douglas McArthur, hero of World War II, was made a Mason in the Philippines.
